Synopsis

A house beside a lake near Berlin remains in place while generations of inhabitants pass through it and German history repeatedly transforms the world around them. In the 1930s, a Jewish family is forced to sell the property. An architect later builds a Bauhaus-style home there, before political circumstances force him west. After the war, the house becomes a refuge for a writer and her husband returning from Soviet exile. Across decades of Nazism, war, division, socialism, and finally the fall of the Berlin Wall, twelve people search for permanence and belonging. Their passions and tragedies disappear, while the house and landscape silently preserve the traces of those who once called the place home.

Volker Schlöndorff

Volker Schlöndorff is a German director and screenwriter, born in Wiesbaden in 1939. After studying in France, he began his film career as an assistant to directors including Louis Malle, Jean-Pierre Melville, and Alain Resnais. He became a central figure of the New German Cinema with films such as Young Törless (1966), The Lost Honour of Katharina Blum (1975), and The Tin Drum (1979), which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Throughout a career spanning more than five decades, Schlöndorff has frequently adapted major literary works and explored the relationship between personal experience, political responsibility, memory, and XX century European history.
