Synopsis

In the landscape of 20th-century music, only a handful of artists did more than perform - they reshaped the language of sound itself. Among them stands Azerbaijani pianist and composer Vagif Mustafazadeh, a singular figure who transformed cultural limitation into creative revolution. By fusing Mugham, the ancient modal improvisational tradition of the East, with the harmonic freedom of American jazz, Mustafazadeh forged a groundbreaking idiom: Jazz-Mugham Drawing on rare archival footage, historic recordings, and intimate testimonies, the film traces his artistic and personal journey. Voices from across the global music and cultural sphere - including broadcaster Willis Conover, whose radio programs introduced Vagif to wider audiences; musicians influenced by his work; and prominent figures such as Aziza Mustafazadeh, Niyazi, and Rustam Ibragimbekov - reconstruct the portrait of an artist whose impact transcended geography and ideology.
