Synopsis
Céline travels to Armenia for the first time to officially register the death of her husband, Arto. Once there, however, she discovers that much of what she believed about him was untrue. Arto had fought in the war, assumed another identity, and left behind former friends who considered him a deserter. Determined to understand the man she loved, Céline begins travelling through Armenia and meeting people connected to his hidden past: veterans of the wars of the 1990s, wounded survivors of the 2020 conflict, and others still carrying the consequences of a war that never seems entirely over. Following the traces of a dead man, she gradually confronts questions of love, memory, betrayal, mourning, and whether it is ever possible to truly bury the ghosts of the past.

Tamara Stepanyan
Tamara Stepanyan is an Armenian filmmaker based in France. She studied filmmaking at the Lebanese American University and documentary filmmaking at the National Film School of Denmark. Her first feature-length documentary, Embers, won the Best Documentary Award at the Busan International Film Festival, while Those from the Shore received awards at the Boston and Amiens film festivals. Village of Women screened at more than thirty festivals and received nine international awards. Her documentary My Armenian Phantoms premiered at the Berlin International Film Festival and was selected as Armenia’s submission for the Academy Awards. In the Land of Arto marks her fiction feature debut. Her cinema frequently explores memory, displacement, identity, absence, and the lasting impact of history on individual lives.
