Synopsis

Mihai and Lisbet Gheorghiu, a deeply religious Romanian-Norwegian couple with five children, move from Romania to a remote village on a Norwegian fjord. They soon become close to their neighbors, the Halbergs, and despite their very different upbringings, the children of the two families form friendships. The fragile harmony is shattered when bruises are discovered on the body of the Gheorghius’ eldest daughter, Elia. Questions arise about the family’s traditional methods of discipline, drawing schools, neighbors, police, and child-protection authorities into their private life. Refusing easy answers, the film explores the collision between faith and secular society, parental authority and state responsibility, cultural difference and the limits of tolerance.

Cristian Mungiu

Cristian Mungiu is a Romanian director, screenwriter, and producer, born in Iași in 1968. After studying English literature and working as a teacher and journalist, he studied film directing at the Academy of Theatre and Film in Bucharest. His second feature, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (2007), won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and became one of the defining films of the Romanian New Wave. Beyond the Hills (2012) received the Best Screenplay and Best Actress awards at Cannes, while Graduation (2016) earned him Best Director. In 2026, Fjord brought Mungiu his second Palme d’Or. His films are known for rigorous realism and morally complex situations in which social institutions, personal responsibility, and conflicting values collide.
