Synopsis

Mariano De Santis, a respected Catholic jurist, is approaching the end of his term as President of the Italian Republic. A widower still emotionally attached to the memory of his wife, he shares a close but complicated relationship with his daughter Dorotea, herself a legal scholar. During the quiet final months of his presidency, two requests for presidential pardons reach his desk. Each raises difficult questions about guilt, punishment, compassion, and responsibility, and both gradually become entangled with unresolved aspects of Mariano’s private life. Unable to rely on easy moral certainties, the President must confront his doubts and decide where law ends and the possibility of grace begins.

Paolo Sorrentino

Paolo Sorrentino is an Italian director, screenwriter, and author, born in Naples in 1970. His feature debut, One Man Up (2001), began a long collaboration with actor Toni Servillo. He gained international recognition with The Consequences of Love (2004) and Il Divo (2008), which won the Jury Prize at Cannes. His 2013 film The Great Beauty received the Academy Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA for Best Foreign Language Film. His subsequent works include Youth (2015), the television series The Young Pope (2016), The Hand of God (2021), and Parthenope (2024). Sorrentino is known for visually elaborate filmmaking that combines irony, melancholy, beauty, politics, spirituality, and reflections on ageing and desire.
