Synopsis

The film observes the harsh everyday existence of people living in the isolated mountain communities of Upper Svanetia, their traditions, labour, and struggle against an unforgiving natural environment. A severe shortage of salt forces inhabitants to make dangerous journeys to the lowlands in search of this essential commodity. Visually striking and ethnographically rich, the film combines documentary observation with the ideological perspective of its Soviet period.
