Synopsis
A young woman studying photography abroad returns to her hometown for her father’s funeral. Frequently mistaken for a boy and still struggling with questions surrounding her gender identity, she finds herself emotionally distant from her estranged mother. Wandering through familiar streets with her camera and confronting the gossip surrounding the funeral, she searches through memories of childhood until an unexpected gesture from her mother briefly opens the possibility of understanding between them.

Kun Sun is a Chinese filmmaker whose short-form work combines intimate character observation with themes of family, memory, gender, and identity. The Wind in Ash has screened internationally as part of the new generation of Chinese short cinema. Her approach places personal experience and visual observation at the centre of stories about characters negotiating the expectations of family and society.
