Synopsis
During a Mid-Autumn Festival dinner in Hong Kong, a prosperous family gathers in anticipation of a long-awaited son. At the edge of the celebration sits the young woman carrying the baby, observing the woman who will raise him. As ritual, food, and family expectations fill the evening, the relationship between surrogate and intended mother exposes tensions surrounding motherhood, infertility, class, belonging, and the unequal power hidden beneath the family’s apparent harmony.
Anatole Sloan
Anatole Sloan is a British-Chinese director raised between Hong Kong, Japan, and the United Kingdom. Before moving into fiction, he worked in documentary photography and filmmaking, developing an observational approach centered on character and moral complexity. Our Child, his fiction debut, was developed after winning the Drama Award of The Pitch Film Fund and was produced as a UK–Hong Kong co-production.
