Synopsis
Burdened by family tradition and her mother’s silence, a young girl searches through a vast landscape of sand for her missing identity card. Without it, she cannot enrol at the Beijing Opera academy and pursue the future she imagines for herself. Her physical search gradually becomes a journey through identity, expectation, and the cultural inheritance that both connects her to and separates her from her family.

Dorothea Sing Zhang
Dorothea Sing Zhang is a filmmaker and visual artist whose work moves between highly constructed imagery and near-documentary realism. A graduate of the Slade School of Fine Art, she later studied filmmaking at École de Leth with filmmakers including Lars von Trier, Jørgen Leth, and Thomas Vinterberg. Her shorts include BàBà, Masterpiece Mommy, and A Small Fiction of My Mother in Beijing. Her cinema frequently explores family, memory, identity, and the tension between inherited traditions and individual experience.
